About
After the Prague Spring of 1968 and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, Romania decided to reduce its reliance on the Soviet Union. It used the successful T-55 main battle tank as the basis for two new tanks it produced with both domestic and foreign components: the TR-85 and the TR-580. The earlier of the two designs, the TR-580, entered service in 1982. Its name comes from its 580-hp engine.
