About
After World War I, the U.S. Army pursued an interest in developing highly mobile light and medium tanks. A 1926 order from the Ordnance Department called for a medium tank that would weigh less than 15 tons. Despite enthusiasm for the project, a lack of funding prevented construction of the prototype that would become the T2 Medium Tank from starting until 1929. The prototype was completed in 1930 and sent for trials from 1930 to 1932, receiving high marks for its performance. However, budget constraints due to the Great Depression kept the T2 out of production.
