About
After World War II, the U.S. military explored ways to improve its heavy tanks. One such project began in 1951 with the T43 as its foundation. Designers wished to equip the T43 with an autoloader but determined that the vehicle’s turret was a poor fit. The solution proposed was to use an oscillating turret, which would reduce the vehicle’s weight while also allowing it to mount the autoloader and a 120mm gun. The resulting design was named the 120mm Gun Tank T57. Development work continued until January 1957, when changes in military doctrine resulted in the project’s termination.
