About
Early in the 1970s, the U.S. Army began to reevaluate the role its armored scouting vehicles should play in combat. It accepted proposals for a new, well-rounded reconnaissance vehicle to replace the M114 and, in 1972, offered development contracts to FMC and Lockheed. Although both designs were designated the XM800, Lockheed’s version was wheeled, while FMC’s was tracked. FMC’s XM800T also featured a 20mm main gun and space for a three-person crew. Budget cuts led neither design to be accepted for production.
