About
In the 1980s, the U.S. military began searching for a new air-mobile light tank to replace the M551 Sheridan. To facilitate development, it launched the Armored Gun System program through which manufacturers could submit their designs. The Expeditionary Tank, developed starting in 1982, was the proposal from Teledyne Vehicle Systems. Although its external gun turret and shallow front slope design were distinct, it eventually lost to a design from United Defense in 1992. The Expeditionary Tank’s turret was later repurposed for the Stryker M1128 Mobile Gun System.
