About
When it was introduced in 1983, the Challenger 1 represented an evolution of the main battle tank doctrine that the British Army had embraced with its Centurion and Chieftain vehicles. The Mark 3 variant of the Challenger initially entered production in 1988. However, it received a notable update just before the start of the Persian Gulf War’s ground offensive in February 1991, when Challenger vehicles were fitted with the ROMOR-A explosive reactive armor (ERA) package for improved protection against Iraqi anti-tank missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.
