About
After the dissolution of the MBT-70 project in 1970, several NATO-aligned nations explored different options to create an updated main battle tank. The UK, in particular, was interested in an upgrade to its Chieftain tanks. After determining that its joint Future Main Battle Tank project with Germany could not be completed in a reasonable time, it pursued development of the MBT-80, a design for a main battle tank with a 120mm rifled gun. However, due to time and budget constraints, this project was cancelled in favor of the Challenger I.
