About
Just as work on the Type 74 began shortly after the Type 61 entered service, so work on the Type 74’s successor began soon after the Type 74’s introduction. Initially designated the STC project, the TK-X program was launched in 1976, with the design of the first prototype being finalized in 1980. Chief among the features of the TK-X 001 was a Japanese-designed 120mm gun, a feature that was abandoned as the design was revised.
