About
Developed throughout the 1960s and produced in the mid-1970s, the M60A2 was the only U.S. tank besides the M551 Sheridan to feature the Shillelagh missile system. The system used a 152mm XM81 gun fitted to a new low-profile turret and mounted to an M60 hull. The technological complexity of the M60A2 earned it the nickname “Starship” but also resulted in performance issues that led to it being phased out of use.
