About
Following the Bundeswehr's long tradition of frequent incremental changes and upgrades to its panzer fleet, production of the Leopard 2 evolved into the 2A4 standard. The Leopard 2A4 featured a new all-digital fire control system, and improved turret armor. All previously built Leopard 2s in the Bundeswehr's inventory were also updated to the 2A4 standard. The Leopard 2A4 was the variant with the largest numbers built, with over 1800 Leopard 2A4s constructed between 1985 and 1992, with numerous exports, particularly after the end of the cold war and unification with East Germany.
