About
In 1984, the Italian firms IVECO and OTO Melara formed a new venture and finalized the details of a joint design for an Italian main battle tank. The tank, which was to be named the Ariete (meaning “ram”) after the 132nd Armored Division, would replace the aging M60 and Leopard 1 units in the Italian Army’s service. Among its features was a 120mm smoothbore gun, considered a standard for main battle tanks at the time. The first of the 200 Ariete units ordered was accepted into service in 1995.
