About
Although the Conqueror heavy tank did not enter service until the mid-1950s, it was conceived earlier, in the years immediately following World War II, partly as a response to the threat posed by the Soviet IS-3. The Conqueror’s service life was brief, with the production units being retired by 1966. However, its 120mm gun and its status as the British Army’s heaviest tank ever in service have inspired other conceptual designs, including those fielding large anti-vehicle guns.
